Eid-ul-Fitr being celebrated throughout India
The day marks the end of the Islamic Holy month of Ramzan and the beginning of the next lunar month.
Ramzan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting that is kept for spiritual purification.
President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice President Hamid Ansari and Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended their Eid wishes to the people.
"On the joyous occasion of Idu'l Fitr, I convey warm greetings and good wishes to my fellow citizens, particularly to all Muslim brothers and sisters... Let us on this day forgive and forget our difference," Mukherjee said.
Prime Minister Modi greeted: "The holy month of Ramzan is coming to an end. People are waiting for Eid. The country and the world will celebrate Eid. I extend hearty greetings on this occasion...the festival epitomises values of brotherhood and harmony in society."
"May this festival strengthen bonds of unity and peace in our nation, and may everyone be blessed with prosperity and good health."
In his message, Ansari said, "May the noble ideals that mark Id-ul-Fitr enrich our lives with peace, prosperity and harmony and unite us all in the spirit of humanity."
In New Delhi, the biggest Eid congregation is organized In Jamia Masjid where lakhs of Muslims offer Eid prayers.
Similar congregations are held in every city and town with the participation of millions of Muslims.
