Ex-CBI director Aswani Kumar found hanging at Shimla home, leaves behind a note: Cops
New Delhi/IBNS: Former director of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and ex-Governor of Manipur and Nagaland, Ashwani Kumar, was found dead at his residence in Shimla late on Wednesday night. He was 69.
Shimla Superintendent of Police Mohit Chawla informed media that Kumar committed suicide at his home.
His body has been sent for autopsy and an inquiry has been initiated in the case.
"Hanging body of former Governor and CBI chief Ashwani Kumar (69) was found on Wednesday night in his Shimla residence. We have sent the body for autopsy, an inquiry has been initiated into the unnatural death of 1973 batch IPS officer. Forensic experts also visited the scene and collected evidences," he said.
Sources in the Shimla Police said that a suicide note, ostensibly written by Ashwani Kumar, has been recovered from the scene.
The authenticity of the suicide note is being verified with the family.
According to media reports, Kumar was in a state of depression for several weeks.
An IPS officer from the Himachal Pradesh cadre, Kumar served as DGP for the state between 2006 and 2008 before being appointed Director of the CBI for a two-year period.
Kumar was in charge of the central probe agency when it investigated the high-profile Aarushi Talwar murder case.
He also served as Governor of Nagaland between 2013 and 2014.
During that period he briefly served as the Governor of Manipur as well.
He is survived by his wife and son.
