Ex-Meghalaya CM DD Lapang quits Congress party
Shillong, Sept 14 (IBNS): Former Meghalaya Chief Mininster DD Lapang on Thursday severed his ties with the Congress after serving the party for four decades, media reports said.
Lapang informed Congress president Rahul Gandhi about his resignation in a letter.
In the letter, the leader said the party no longer considers veterans as useful.
Lapang has been quoted by NDTV, "In my opinion, it means that their (senior and elderly party leaders) service and contribution are no longer useful to the party. Since the spirit and enthusiasm to work for the people are still burning inside me, this restriction frustrated and compelled me to be no longer comfortable to be in the party."
"With my present age and health condition, I have decided to continue serving the people of the country, my state and its people in the same manner wherever I am," he said. "Therefore, reluctantly and with my heavy heart, I would discontinue my dedication towards the Congress party and I tender my resignation with immediate effect."
The 84-year old leader became the Chief Minister of the state for four times.
Lapang was removed as the state Congress chief last year.
Though the Congress has 20 MLAs in the Meghalaya Assembly, National People's Party (NPP), which also has the same number of lawmakers, formed the government in 2018 with the support of other outfits including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
