Fake currency; 2 sent to police custody
Mumbai, Mar 11 (UNI) A local court here on Monday remanded two persons to seven days police custody for their involvement in circulating fake currency.
The two were identified as Asabullah Shaikh (28) and Asmi Karmkar.
Police sources said that the duo circulated Rs 4 lakh in fake currency through small shops and street-side hawkers in Mumbai and Thane.
The cops have said that Karmkar would travel to Mumbai with the fake currency from West Bengal and hand it over to Shaikh, who then brought it into circulation here.
During investigation, Shaikh confessed the crime and said that he used to visit crowded shops in the evening to buy goods valuing around Rs 200-500, give a Rs 2,000 note and receive change in genuine currency.
He also said that he would visit markets in Kandivili, Nalasopara, Vasai Road and Bhiwandi during the rush.
He used fake currency to buy a variety of goods, varying from clothesto accessories.
He used to shop goods worth around Rs 3,000 to 4,000 daily and earn around Rs 2,500 to 3,000 (real currency)as a change in return.
He also said that he was arrested thrice earlier also, but escaped by saying that he was given the fake note by some other shopkeeper. In 2011, Shaikh was arrested by the crime branch with fake currency and was jailed for one-and-a-half years for the same.
Later, he visited West Bengal to continue the fake currency business, police added.
