First day of Bharat Bandh was a grand success: CITU
New Delhi: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) said that the first day of Bharat Bandh on Monday against the government's planned privatisation was a "grand success".
"The first day of all-India general strike was a grand success. Massive participation from all sections of the working class," a statement issued from the CITU said.
According to the union, which is affiliated to the CPI-M, the all-India strike had a significant impact in West Bengal and southern states due to the participation of public transport unions.
"Kerala, West Bengal, Tripura, Haryana and Tamil Nadu observed bandh like the situation with the public transport strike," it said.
CITU stated that industrial areas in most states participated in the strike.
The major sectors which are on strike according to CITU including finance, banking and insurance, telecom, port and docks, petroleum, steel, coal, power grid, BHEL, public road transport, plantation, textiles and garments. State and central government employees including Anganwadi, ASHA, construction, beedi, hawkers and vendors also joined the shutdown, CITU claimed.
