Five labourers killed, three injured in electrocution in Meghalaya

Guwahati, July 26 (IBNS): Five labourers, including four from neighbouring Assam, were killed and three others injured in an electrocution incident in Meghalaya’s North Garo Hills district on Wednesday evening.

The incident took place at Miapara village under Mendipathar police station, where the labourers were engaged in a road construction work.

They died after getting caught in a low lying high tension wire.

According to the reports, the incident occurred after the labourers, who were rolling a road construction machine, hit the overhead high tension wire carrying 11 KV current.

Five people died on spot, while, three others suffered severe wounds.

They were rushed to Assam’s Goalpara town for medical treatment.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of North Garo Hills district, Nikcheng Momin, said that the labourers didn’t see the overhanging high tension wire when the machine contacted the wire.

The deceased persons were identified as Sanwar Rehman, Jonal Uddin, Chand Mia, Ashraf Ali. They were residents of Merarchar village in Assam’s Bongaigaon district, while another deceased was identified as Dipen Rabha from Miapara village in North Garo Hills district.

Identities of the injured three persons are yet to be ascertained.

North Garo Hills district police have started an investigation into the incident.
