Former Assam minister denies involvement into alleged US firm bribery case
During a press conference, the Congress MLA of Jalukbari constituency said that he was never involved in the alleged bribery case.
“ Names of no minister from Assam has been mention as connected to the bribery case involving the US firm in the chargesheet filed in the US court,” Dr Sarma said.
Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma was then minister of Guwahati Development department when the US firm won contract for a water supply project in Guwahati under Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA).
US Department of Justice had revealed in their 11-page chargesheet that Louis Berger had maintained detailed diary and account of bribery made to Indian officials.
The firm admitted to involvement of its employees in bribe payments of $ 3.9 million between 1998 and 2010 in India, Indonesia, Kuwait and Vietnam.
Former executives of the firm Richard Hirsch (61 years) and James McClung (59 years) had pleaded guilty in the Federal court in Trenton, New Jersey.
Louis Berger International Inc had won contract as Project Management Consultant (PMC) of a water supply project worth Rs 1427 cr under GMDA in the year 2009-2010.
The project was financed by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
