Gadkari invites Sonia, Anna for open debate on land bill
His move comes amid a dogged resistance to the bill by the opposition and a growing affinity between the Congress and social activist Anna Hazare-both fiercely opposed to the amendments brought in by the Narendra Modi government.
Reports said Gadkari has extended the invitation through letters written to heavyweights like Congress President Sonia Gandhi and social activists Anna Hazare.
"I have written a letter to Sonia Gandhi and Anna Hazare and have given them invitation for an open discussion," Gadkari ha said.
"I have requested leaders of political parties and social activists to come on a platform, whether electronic or print media, and have an open discussion," he said.
Gandhi led the march of 14 opposition parties to the Rashtrapati Bhavan against Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Amendment) Bill, 2015lon Tuesday while Hazare has been leading a farmers' agitation against it.
Gandhi on Wednesday wrote a letter to Hazare in reply to his earlier missive, sharing his concern over the land bill and vowing to continue her party's fight against it.
"I am in agreement with your views that the Ordinance of the NDA government and the amendment bill, which is now before Parliament, is not in the interest of farmers," Gandhi wrote.
