Gadkari meets Vasundhara, declares party's suppor over Lalit Modi controversy

| | Jun 22, 2015, at 07:11 pm
Jaipur, June 22 (IBSN) Amid the raging controversy over controversial cricket administrator Lalit Modi's connections with the BJP high-ups union minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday met Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje to declare the party's support to her.
"The whole party is behind her," said  Gadkari, "she has done nothing illegal."

His assertion puts  an end to Raje's future about whom the BJP first maintained silence and then went defensive.

Raje faces the allegations regarding her connections to  Modi, who left India for London in 2010 amid a spate of reports on a series of corruption linked to his tenure as the chief of the Indian Premier League.

Modi disclosed that his appeal for immigration to UK officials was backed by a "secret" document from  Raje. However, the Rajasthan CM says she is not aware of the document  Modi cited.

It was also revealed that  Raje's son, Dushyant Singh, MP, was the beneficiary of a deal from Modi. The former IPL boss paid Rs. 96,000 for shares in a company owned by Singh, who, in his income tax returns, claims the value of the shares to be just Rs. 10 each.

The BJP has, however, said that  Singh paid the due taxes on the transaction, but the deal is reportedly being investigated for foreign exchange and other violations.

The Gadkari-Raje meeting  assumes significance as it is the first one between the Rajasthan CM and  a senior party leader since the controversy broke out.

She  had earlier cancelled a trip to Punjab where she was slated to meet BJP president Amit Shah and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
