Get Rahul Gandhi married: Shiv Sena

| | Apr 14, 2014, at 03:56 pm
Mumbai, Apr 14 (IBNS) Defending Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on his marital status, ally Shiv Sena has said the Congress should get its vice president Rahul Gandhi married first before commenting on the issue.

In an editorial in party mouthpiece Saamana, the Shiv Sena said: "They (Congress) are foolish to think Modi can be dragged into a legal tangle over his marital status. Instead of making an issue over this, they should get Rahul Gandhi married."

"Is Modi's marital status a national issue? Will debating on the issue bring down inflation or bring back the black money from coal scam?" the Shiv Sena asked.

The Congress party on Friday filed a complaint with the Election Commission (EC) against Modi for hiding his marital status.

Union Law Minister Kapil Sibal while addressing a press conference said, "In 2001 Modi became a candidate in Gujarat, then in 2002, 2007 and 2010 he was a candidate from Maninagar. A rule in Form 26 says he should also disclose his wife's assets and also about his marital status to the Election Commission. But he left it blank in earlier instances."

"In the earlier elections, he never mentioned it which is a legal responsibility," he said.

"Why did he bring it in front of the nation today? There is no answer to that as well
The affidavits filed earlier are all false. We have complained to Election Commission about the same and asked for a probe," Sibal said.

"The fact that he did not disclose it earlier, we don't know why," the Congress leader said.

He said the Commission is liable to take action against Modi.

Earlier in day, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi while addressing a rally said, "We don't know how many elections he (Modi) contested till now, we came to know about his marital status for the first time.  He is concerned about the safety of women in Delhi but his own wife's name doesn't reach the affidavit."

These come after Modi, while filing his nomination papers from Vadodara constituency for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections on Wednesday, accepted that he is married.

He has mentioned "Jashodaben" in the column for spouse, according to reports.

Defending Modi, BJP leader Prakash Javedkar told mediapersons: "Modiji never lied about his marital status."

"I want to warn the Congress party that the more attack you make on him, voters will go against you," Javedkar said.
