Gorakhdham Express mishap: 30 feared killed

Gorakhpur, May 26 (IBNS) At least 30 people are feared dead as six bogies of the Gorakhdham Express got derailed near Churaid Railway Station at Sant Kabir Nagar district in Uttar Pradesh on Monday, said reports.

The death toll is likely to rise.

Many also injured as the Express train hit a stationary goods train near Khalilabad city.

Out of the six coaches, four were general coaches and two were AC coach -- AC first class and AC two tier, reorts said.

A probe has been ordered into the mishap by Commissioner Railway Safety (Northeast circle) PK Bajpayee.

The Railways on Monday also ordered a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to the family of those killed and Rs 50,000 for those seriously injured. A sum of Rs 10,000 will be given to those who sustained simple injuries.

Vice President M. Hamid Ansari in his message said: “I am deeply grieved and shocked at the tragic loss of life and injuries to passengers resulting from the accident of the Gorakhdham Express train that took place at Chureb railway station in Sant Kabir Nagar (U.P.) earlier today."

I convey my heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved families and pray to the Almighty to give them strength and fortitude to withstand this immense loss. I also wish speedy recovery to the injured passengers.”

Earlier, Narendra Modi, who took the oath as the new Prime Minister on Monday, tweeted: "My condolences to families of those who lost their lives in the Gorakhdham express tragedy. Prayers with the injured."

"Spoke to the Cabinet Secretary. Asked him to take an overview of the situation & ensure timely assistance to those injured," he posted on micro-blogging site Twitter.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Rajnath Singh, who will also be sworn in as part of Modi's cabinet on Monday, said: "Deeply saddened to know of the Gorakhdham Express tragedy in which many precious lives have been lost and several others have been injured."

"My heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved families. I wish for speedy recovery of those who got injured in the train accident," he tweeted.

The train was going from Delhi to Gorakhpur.
