Gujarat belled the cat for 2019: Mamata Banerjee on poll result

| @indiablooms | Dec 18, 2017, at 11:25 pm

Kolkata, Dec 18 (IBNS): Gujarat may have rested their faith in PM Modi once again but West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, one of the proponents of a united Opposition, felt the BJP's decline in seat numbers is an ominous sign for the saffron brigade in 2019 General Election.

Reacting to BJP's win in Gujarat, Banerjee tweeted: "I congratulate Gujarat voters for their very balanced verdict at this hour. It is a temporary and face-saving win, but it shows a moral defeat for BJP.  Gujarat voted against atrocities, anxiety and injustice caused to the common people. Gujarat belled the cat for 2019."

Though the BJP managed to win the Gujarat poll, the saffron brigade despite riding on Modi's charismatic campaign failed to touch the 100 mark by one seat opposing Congress' tough fight.

Congress, which has put up a brave fight and unnerved the ruling BJP, settled for 80 seats in total.

While the BJP swept the north, south and central Gujarat, Congress did well in Saurashtra-Kutch region.

Commenting on the reduced margin of victory that the BJP has experienced in Gujarat this time, Shah said this was because of the "caste-based campaign" of the Congress.

"But people of the state rejected their idea. Though the Congress tried to  fuel the fire of caste politics in Gujarat, BJP managed to overcome this and people of the state defeated them,."

Though the West Bengal CM hinted at a change in power in 2019 Lok Sabha poll, Shah said it is the BJP which will win the next General Election.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi has accepted defeat in Gujarat but said his party fought the elections with "dignity."
