Morbi: A cable bridge collapsed in the Machchhu river of Morbi area in Gujarat on Sunday, leaving at least 40 people dead, media reports said.

Several others were hurt in the incident.

The mishap occurred at a time when PM Narendra Modi is visiting Gujarat.

Gujarat director general of police Ashish Bhatia told Hindustan Times, “Presently rescue operations are on and a number of people have been taken to safety. The death figure so far is around 40 and this number could go higher."

Both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Gujarat chief minister Bhupendra Patel have announced ex-gratia for the family of deceased people.

" PM @narendramodi spoke to Gujarat CM @Bhupendrapbjp and other officials regarding the mishap in Morbi. He has sought urgent mobilisation of teams for rescue ops. He has asked that the situation be closely and continuously monitored, and extend all possible help to those affected," PMO India tweeted.
