'In worst possible taste': Shashi Tharoor slams Anurag Thakur's remark on Nehru-Gandhi

New Delhi/IBNS: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Friday slammed Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur’s comment in the Parliament on the Nehru-Gandhi family and said the speech was delivered in the 'worst possible taste'.

A row erupted in Parliament's monsoon session of Friday when Anurag Thakur began speaking in the defence of the PM-CARES fund, which the opposition alleges of lacking transparency.

"From the high court to the Supreme Court, every court has validated the PM-CARES fund. Little children have contributed to it from their piggy banks. Nehru set up a fund that has not been registered to date. You (Congress) only made a trust for the benefit of the Gandhi family. You made Sonia Gandhi its chairman. It should be investigated," Anurag Thakur said while replying to the objections raised by oppositions.

Speaking to ANI, which he later retweeted, Shashi Tharoor said: "PM-CARES Fund is a public charitable trust which has been set up for the people of India. You (Opposition) created trusts for Gandhi family. Nehru & Sonia Gandhi have been members of PM's National Relief Fund. There should be a debate on this:

"Instead of answering objection raised (on PM CARES Fund), Union Minister Anurag Thakur proceeded to deliver political speech in worst possible taste & started attacking everybody from Gandhi, Nehru to present-day Gandhi family which was not relevant," Tharoor said.

Anurag Thakur's remarks evoked an immediate uproar in the Parliament from the opposition benches, specifically, Congress MPs.

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury lashed out at Thakur, calling him a donkey for bringing Nehru into the debate when Prime Minister Modi’s name was not mentioned in the matter.

Lambasting Thakur, he said: "Who is this boy from Himachal? Where has this donkey come from? How did Nehru come into this debate? Did we take (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi's name? This two-bit boy..."
