Incessant rain hits life in Kerala, all five gates of Idukki Reservoir opened

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 10 (IBNS): With incessant rain disrupting life in Kerala,  all the five gates of one of the dams of the Idukki water reservoir in the southern state have been opened to control the swelling water, adding trouble more trouble for the people.

 So far, more than   15,600 people have been evacuated from the flood-hit regions of the state.

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF)  team are currently engaged in rescue operations in the state.

"06 teams of #NDRF deployed in Kerala, engaged in rescue and relief work, in connection with flood and landslide response," tweeted NDRF.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday called Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to discuss flood situation in the southern state, the CMO said in a tweet.

Modi also offered assistance to the state in this dire situation.

The CMO's tweet reads, "The hon’ble @PMOIndia Shri Narendra Modi had called CM Pinarayi Vijayan over phone & discussed about the situation. Prime Minister has offered assistance to the State. CM thanked PM for sending army for rescue efforts. @narendramodi"

Meanwhile, according to latest reports, the death toll due to floods and landslides, which are caused by rain, rose to 27.
In an early tweet, the CMO had said: "A ban has been imposed on the movement of heavy goods vehicles and tourist vehicles in the high ranges of Idukki. The decision was taken on account of unabated rains in the area."

The rain has caused inundation of the state's low lying areas.
