India awaits Modi as PM, BJP set for single majority

With bursting of crackers and roadshows and smearing of gulal, BJP has started celebrating the victory buoyed by the trends though most results are not yet declared.

"India has won! Bharat ki vijay, Acche Din Aane Wale Hai," tweeted Modi repeating his slogan ahead of the polls, even as the stock markets surged with the BSE Sensex crossing 6 percent to record highs.

Modi himself went to meet his mother Heeraben and seek her blessings in Ahmedabad as New Delhi awaits a new Prime Minister whose campaigning since the announcement of his name as the PM candidate took the nation by storm offering a Midas touch to BJP fortunes in the hustings.

Trends showed the BJP-led NDA garnering the magic figure of 272 and crossing it further to 274 with a government in New Delhi.

As per the trends at 1230 pm, the NDA (National Democratic Alliance, led by BJP) is ahead in 325 seats while the UPA (United Progressive Alliance, led by Congress) is ahead in 77 only. Other parties are leading in 60 seats across the country while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is ahead in three seats.

Trends thus show NDA would form a government under Modi without any help of other powers.

Modi has won in both Vadodara and Varanasi seats. AAP's Arvind Kejriwal was contesting against him in Varanasi. Modi won his seat in Vadodara. He won by a record margin of 4, 03,724 votes. Wild celebrations erupted in Vadodara.

In Uttar Pradesh, BJP is leading in 65 seats while Samajwadi Party is ahead in 10. UP's ruling Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav was also trailing. Mayawati's BSP failed to make any gain this time.

In Amethi, Rahul Gandhi is currently leading for the Congress while BJP's Smriti Irani is trailing.

BJP president Rajnath Singh is leading in Lucknow seat. Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi is ahead in Raebareli.

In Amritsar, BJP's Arun Jaitley was trailing.

In West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee's grip in the political paradigm continued as her TMC is ahead in 33 seats while the Left Front is leading in 1. The Congress and the BJP are ahead in five and three seats respectively.

BJP's Babul Supriyo is set to win the Asansol seat and the vote share of BJP this time went up to 17 percent in West Bengal.

AIADMK is ahead in 36 seats in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. The party of J Jayalalithaa is likely to be the third largest party in Parliament as per trends.

The BJD in Odisha is leading in 18 seats. Reports said in Odisha, Naveen Patnaik's BJD is set for victory.

JD-U was leading in five seats only and in Bihar the party led by Nitish Kumar did poorly.

In Gujarat's Gandhinagar, BJP patriarch L K Advani is ahead.

Almost all TMC's celebrity candidates are leading in all their respective seats including actor Dev from Ghatal and Moonmoon Sen from Bankura. Actress Sandhya Roy was also leading as per trends at 12 noon. Former Railway Minister and Trinamool Congress candidate from Barrackpore Dinesh Trivedi won by a margin of over 1 lakh votes.

BJP president Rajnath Singh congratulated Narendra Modi meanwhile.

In the divided Andhra Pradesh, in Telangana region, TRS was ahead while BJP's ally TDP was doing well in Seemandhra.

Modi's mother Heeraben blessed the Gujarat Chief Minister saying: "I am very happy for him. He has my blessings. I pray for the development of this country under his leadership."

In Assam, taking full responsibility for the Congress' poor performance, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has reportedly resigned.

As per the latest poll results, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is leading in three constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir. The ruling National Conference (NC) was trailing by lakhs of votes from all three constituencies in Kashmir Valley.

The Congress admitted that the results were disappointing for them.

"It is a disappointing morning," Congress spokesperson CR Kesavan said speaking to TV channels.

At one point, even Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi was trailing in Amethi seat in Uttar Pradesh though later the trends suggested he was ahead. Infosys man Nandan Nilekeni also lost in Bangalore South seat.

Several Congress leaders admitted that the BJP wave was much owing to the marketing strategy of Narendra Modi.

Senior party leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said 'good governance' will be a focus of the new government.

"Restoring people's confidence in the economy is necessary and good governance is our primary responsibility," Prasad said.

He said NDA's victory became possible due to 'great support' by people of the country.

"This kind of victory would not have been possible without the great support of all kinds of people in the country," he said.

BJP leader Sushma Swaraj said the party will go with its allies despite having single majority.

RSS, BJP's ideological patron, appeared happy and its spokesperson Ram Madhav said they would not meddle in who would be the ministers.

"I want to congratulate Modi and his men," he said, adding that the nation rejected Congress.

He said the role of RSS was to educated people only before votes. "People have voted for change," he said.
