India registers over 1300 COVID-19 cases, 36 deaths so far
New Delhi/IBNS: Even as the Indian government said the country is witnessing only 'local transmission' of the COVID-19 disease at present, the number of infected cases took a steep rise on Monday to reach 1315 and deaths mounted to 36, as per update at 9:45 pm.
According to the latest tally, India presently has 1156 active cases of Novel Coronavirus while 123 people have recovered. The country, meanwhile, completed the fifth day of its 21-day lockdown.
In Delhi alone, a jump of 25 cases has been recorded in the past 24 hours. The number of infected cases in the national capital stands at 97.
Over 300 people in Delhi have been admitted to different hospitals across the city following a gathering at a mosque which hosted visitors from Malaysia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and Kyrgyzstan.
This comes as a man died and 10 more have tested positive for COVID-19 after attending the event earlier this month.
Following the death, people started worrying about infection spread from the gathering of Tableeghi Jamaat preachers at Alami Markaz Banglewali Masjid in Nizamuddin in mid-March.
In West Bengal, a 45-year-old woman from Bongaon in North 24 Parganas district, who had been admitted to Kolkata's Nil Ratan Sarkar (NRS) Medical College and Hospital for possible exposure to COVID-19, died on Monday afternoon, but her test reports are still awaited, officials said.
Presently, West Bengal is treating 20 Novel Coronavirus positive patients at different hospitals while the state has reported two COVID-19 fatalities so far.

Meanwhile, 1.3 billion people across India are observing the 21-day lockdown called by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to stop the spread of Coronavirus.
However, amidst the lockdown, several migrant workers were seen crossing the state borders to reach their homes though the central government has repeatedly urged people to stay wherever they were to stop the spread of COVID-19.
Distressing accounts surfaced on Saturday night from the national capital where thousands of migrant workers, even while fearing for their lives due to virus spread, crowded into bus terminals around Delhi to return back to their hometowns and villages in Uttar Pradesh after they were left with no jobs, shelter or money.
Several narratives of men, women and children trekking on foot in searing heat to their villages have also surfaced after PM Modi's announcement of lockdown for three weeks.
While many migrant workers were seen harassed by police officials on roads, Prime Minister Modi during his monthly radio address to the nation on Sunday apologised for causing "inconvenience" to the poor.
In the global perspective, the novel Coronavirus, active in 177 countries, has left 35,307 people dead while infecting 745,308 across the world.
Right now, the United States has the maximum number of COVID-19 infected cases. The number stands at 144,672. The country has reported 2,757 deaths, according to John Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Centre live trackers.
Italy has recorded maximum deaths with toll being 10,779. Over 97 thousand people are affected in the country.
