Srinagar/UNI: A militant was killed in an encounter by security forces in the south Kashmir district of Kulgam on Friday, Inspector General of Police (IGP) K Vijay Kumar said.

Meanwhile, a traffic police official told UNI that traffic on Srinagar-Jammu national highway remained suspended due to an encounter at Malpora in Kulgam since Thursday afternoon as a precautionary measure.

Kumar said militants attacked Border Security Force (BSF) convoy on Srinagar-Jammu national highway on Thursday afternoon at Malpora, Mirbazar, in Kulgam district.

Security forces also retaliated but the militants escaped and entered a nearby building. Later, additional security forces were rushed and cordon around the building was further tightened.

He said two Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants were holed up in the building. This morning one of the militants was killed, Kumar said adding the operation was still going on when the reports last came in.

He said two security forces and as many civilians were injured in the encounter.

He said 22 civilians, including shopkeepers, women and non-local labourers were rescued from the encounter site safely.
