Jammu and Kashmir: Militants wanted to target army recruitment, say police

Srinagar: Two militants shot dead in Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir were planning to target the Army’s ongoing recruitment rally, a police officer said on Friday.

The militants were killed in a gun battle at Yedipora Pattan.

The encounter site is close to the venue where the Army recruitment rally is on.

Senior Superintendent of Police Rayees Mohammad Bhat said the gunfight broke out when the security forces cordoned off the area.

“As we approached the suspected spot, the terrorists fired indiscriminately. We retaliated effectively leading to an encounter in which two terrorists were killed,” he told reporters.

He said arms and ammunition including an AKS-74U rifle was recovered from the site.

“The plan of the terrorists was to disturb the recruitment rally," the officer said.
