Jammu and Kashmir: Voting underway for first phase of local body polls
Srinagar, Oct 8 (IBNS): Amid heavy security, people in Jammu and Kashmir are voting in the first phase of civic polls on Monday.
However, two major parties of the Valley- National Conference and Mehbooba Mufti's People's Democratic Party- have boycotted the polls.
Polling is currently underway in 422 of the state's 1,100 municipal wards.
In the four-phase elections, voters will decide the fates of 2990 candidates.
On Monday, voting commenced at 7 am and will continue till 4 pm.
The election for the urban local bodies in the north Indian state was last held in 2005.
Second, third and fourth phases of the polling will take place on Oct 10, 13 and 16 respectively.
The counting the voting will take place on Oct 20.
