Jammu and Kashmir: Woman, son killed, six houses gutted in Srinagar fire

Srinagar/UNI: A woman and her minor son died while six houses were gutted in a devastating fire in the uptown Srinagar in the wee hours of Monday, official sources said.

The fire broke out in a house at Haft-Chinar in uptown Srinagar at about 0030 hrs. However, before the fire tenders could reach, the flames spread to other adjoining areas.

Police personnel from the nearby Shergari police station and locals from adjoining areas joined the operation to douse the flames.

A woman and his six-year-old son, who were sleeping in their house, could not be rescued as the roof collapsed, the sources said, adding that later both were rushed to a hospital where they were declared brought dead.

Fire tenders from different parts of the city, including Fire and Emergency Department, Batmaloo extinguished the fire.

Six houses and other household goods worth lakhs of rupees have been damaged in the incident.

The cause of fire was yet to be ascertained, the sources said, adding that police has registered a case and initiated proceedings.
