Mumbai/IBNS: Veteran Bollywood writer-lyricist Javed Akhtar's call to end the practice of chanting 'Azaan' on loudspeakers has earned criticisms with some even calling him a 'non-Muslim'.

Akhtar made the remark at a time when the Muslim community of the nation is observing Ramadan.

"In India for almost 50 yrs Azaan on the loud speak was HARAAM (forbidden) Then it became HaLAAL (allowed) n so halaal that there is no end to it but there should be an end to it Azaan is fine but loud speaker does cause of discomfort for others I hope that atleast this time they will do it themselves," Akhtar tweeted.

All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen spokesperson Syed Asim Waqar said in a video post: "I am opposing his comment and you should also do it."

"He should not call himself a Muslim," he said.

Interestingly, when a netizen asked him about the use of loudspeaker in temples, Akhtar said the gadget should not be used regularly either in mosques or in temples.

He said: " Voh mandir ho ya masjid. Kabhi kisi festival per loud speaker ho to chalo theek hai .Magar roz roz to na mandir mein hona chahiye na Masjid mean .For more than thousand years Azaan was given with out the loud speaker Azaan is the integral part of yourfaith not this gadget."
