JNU row: Lawyer Yashpal Singh who attacked journalists arrested
New Delhi, Feb 23 (IBNS): The police on Tuesday arrested lawyer Yashpal Singh, who was caught on camera attacking teachers, students and journalists at the court hearing in the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) case in Delhi last week.
Singh's arrest comes following a sting operation aired by India Today news channel on Monday.
In the broadcast, three lawyers including Singh were heard bragging that they thrashed JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar for three hours while he was in police custody.
The Supreme Court has also agreed to hear a petition that seeks action based on the TV sting that purportedly features Singh, Vikram Chauhan and Om Sharma involved in the assault on JNU students, teachers and journalists on Feb 15 and 17.
Meanwhile, not giving any protection from arrest, two students of JNU-Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhttacharya- have been directed by the Delhi High Court to surrender.
The two students have not been granted interim protection from arrest till Wednesday.
Both the students are accused of organizing an event to mark the death anniversary of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru where anti-India slogans were raised.
JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar was recently arrested on sedition charges.
Kumar's bail plea will be heard by the Delhi High Court on Wednesday.
