Karnataka cabinet portfolios: JD(S) gets Finance, Congress keeps Home Ministry

Bengaluru, Jun 1 (IBNS): Ending a long discussion over the cabinet allocations of Karnataka government, the Janata Dal (Secular) got the Finance Ministry while the Congress kept the Home Ministry with itself, media reports said.

Congress general secretary KC Venugopal told media that the JD(S) will be keeping the Finance Ministry with itself.

Venugopal has been quoted by The Indian Express as saying, "We (Congress-JDS) have come to a conclusion regarding cabinet expansion and portfolio allocation. JDS will be holding the finance portfolio. Everything is settled."

Along with the Home Ministry, the Congress has kept Bengaluru City Development Department under its control.

Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy has said the ministry expansion will take place on Jun 6.

The Congress and the JD(S), which stitched a post-poll alliance in Karnataka to form the state government, were locked up for days over the allocation of the Finance Ministry mostly.

The announcement has been made following a conversation between Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who is now in the US, and former Prime Minister and JD(S) chief HD Deve Gowda.

Though the Congress and the JD(S) fought the recently concluded Karnataka assembly elections separately, they stitched an alliance to keep the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which emerged as the single largest outfit, away from power.

The Congress and the JD(S) together formed the Karnataka government with the support of 117 MLAs.

With the Congress' support, JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy sworn-in as the new Karnataka Chief Minister.
