Karnataka: Congress-JD(s), BJP meet Governor over claiming stakes to form government

| @indiablooms | May 15, 2018, at 11:55 pm

Bangalore, May 15 (IBNS): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which emerged as the single largest party in the state but fell short of touching the majority mark, competed with the JD(S)-Congress team in meeting governor Vajubhai Vala to stake claim to form the government in Karnataka.

BJP's chief ministerial candidate BS Yeddyurappa met the Governor just moments before the JD(S) and Congress team met Vala at the Raj Bhawan.

Speaking to reporters, Yeddyurappa said he wanted to get a chance to prove majority in the house.

HD Kumaraswamy, Siddaramaiah, Ghulam Nabi Azad, DK Shivakumar and other Congress MLAs also reached the Raj Bhawan to meet the Governor, media reports said.

Siddaramaiah, the outgoing Chief Minister, told media that his party has given unconditional support to the JD(S).

Earlier in the day, Siddaramaiah, who won from the Badami seat, had submitted his resignation to the Governor.

In a major development in the political paradigm of Karnataka, HD Kumaraswamy of the Janata Dal (Secular) has claimed to form government in Karnataka by accepting Congress' support.

"The JDS leader has sought an appointment with Governor Vajubhai Vala to present a letter of support," NDTV reported.

HD Kumaraswamy is likely to become the Chief Minister of the state.

The result of the Karnataka Assembly polls were declared on Tuesday.
