Karti Chidambaram sent to CBI custody for five days

New Delhi, Mar 1 (IBNS): Former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram's son Karti, who was arrested on Wednesday for his involvement in a money laundering case, has been sent to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) custody for five days.

Karti will be produced in the court next on March 6.

The CBI wanted a 15-day custody for Karti.

Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi, who is fighting the money laundering case slapped on Karti Chidambaram, on Thursday took a dig at the investigating agency in the court, media reports said.

Singhvi has said the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was also Kumbhakarna (sleeping mode).

Karti, who is the son of former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram, was arrested on Wednesday in the case in Chennai.

He was taken into a one-day custody first.

The CBI  has accused Karti of "non-cooperation" with the investigating agency.

However Singhvi countered the CBI's lawyer to say, "There is no allegation of non-cooperation for six months yet still the sudden arrest."

The senior Congress leader has also said the agency is trying to "prejudice court with half-baked facts".

A case was filed against Karti by the Enforcement Directorate in May last year alleging irregularities in the grant of Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to INX Media for receiving foreign investment of over Rs. 300 crore in 2007.

P Chidambaram, a Congress veteran, was serving as the Union Finance Minister during that period.

The CBI had filed separate case against Karti and others on the basis of information about alleged illegal payments made by INX media.

Karti had earlier denied charges made against him.
