Srinagar/UNI: Security forces thwarted a possible attack ahead of Independence Day (ID) when they arrested two hybrid militants of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) along with arms and ammunition in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Wednesday.

Police, in a statement, said that "on specific information regarding the movement of terrorists in town Baramulla who are likely to carry out terrorist activities in view of the forthcoming Independence Day 2023, Joint forces of Police, 53 Bn CRPF, and Army 46 RR placed a MVCP at Azadgunj old town Baramulla".

They said two suspects who were coming towards Azadgunj Baramulla tried to flee while noticing the joint checking party but were apprehended tactfully.

During their search, 1 pistol, 1 pistol magazine, 4 live Pistol rounds, and 1 Grenade were recovered from them and taken into custody immediately.

The duo were later identified as Faisal Majeed Ganie, a resident of Bungalow Bagh Baramulla, and Nourul Kamran Ganie of Bagh-e-Islam Old Town Baramulla.

During the preliminary investigation, it came to light that both individuals are hybrid terrorists, are affiliated with the banned terrorist organisation of the LeT outfit, and have collected the arms and ammunition for carrying out terrorist activities in Baramulla town in view of the forthcoming Independence Day", they added.

A case under the Indian Arms Act and the UA (P) Act was registered at Police Station Baramulla, and investigations were taken up.
