Kolkata: Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), clashed with police while protesting against the "irrational hike" in electric bills at Chittaranjan Avenue here on Wednesday.

The rally, which was led by BJYM state president Debjit Sarkar, had started from the BJP's state headquarters near M.G. Road in Chittaranjan Avenue.

After trying to stop the rally, the police had opened tear gas and used water cannons to disperse the protesters.

The BJP claimed hundreds of its leaders and workers were arrested from the protest rally.

BJP leader Raju Banerjee, who was also arrested, told media, "There is no democracy in West Bengal. We all know that the Trinamool Congress is now run by Sanjiv Goenka (the chairman of RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group which runs the Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation)."

The BJP claimed five of their partymen were injured and they were taken to hospital.
