Kolkata: Elderly woman's gold chain snatched by bike-borne miscreants in Dhakuria
Kolkata/IBNS: A 60-year-old woman's gold chain on neck was snatched by three bike-borne miscreants in broad daylight at Dhakuria in Kolkata, raising concerns over the security in the city.
Piyali Dey Roy was heading to a relative's home in the same south Kolkata neighbourhood when the incident occurred.
She faced the attack at 5 pm last Saturday near Dhakuria Jheel Road.
In the CCTV footage, a scream was heard and the bike riders were spotted fleeing the spot.
No arrest has been made yet on the incident.
Dey Roy, who was traumatised by the incident, said her attention was first diverted by the men towards a flat building and then the attempt to snatch the chain was made.
When she resisted, the men charged her and succeeded in snatching the gold chain in the second attempt.
The woman rushed back to her home, narrated the incident to her husband and then their son, who lives in Bengaluru, filed a complaint with police at Lalbazar via e-mail on Saturday night.
Police said a case has been filed and the probe is on.
'No trust in police'
Dey Roy has lost all hope in the police and is also mulling moving to her son's place in Bengaluru.
"We don't have any trust in the police anymore... The situation in Kolkata is very poor. The city is 100 percent unsafe," the woman said speaking to ABP Ananda.
Unprecedented, says local councillor
Local councillor from the Communist Party of India, Madhuchhanda Deb pinned the blame on the lack of manpower in the police and claimed such an incident has never occurred in the locality.
"It is for the first time such an incident has happened in Ward number 92 in broad daylight. There is also a manifold increase in the habit of consuming alcohol in public in the locality too. Police should patrol the lanes but they too lack in manpower," said Deb speaking to the local news channel.
