Kolkata: Jadavpur University removes professor Kanak Sarkar whose 'virgin girl' remark triggered controversy
Kolkata, Jan 16 (IBNS): A Jadavpur University professor, who has triggered a controversy with his Facebook comments on 'virgin girl', has been taken off his duties as a teacher, media reports said.
The university said substitute arrangements will be decided in a meeting of Board of Studies.
The National Commission for Women on Tuesday directed the police to take action against the professor.
In his social media post, the professor compared a woman's virginity to a "sealed bottle" or "packet".
Kanak Sarkar is a professor at the university's international relations department.
The Commission tweeted: "@NCWIndia has taken Suo Motu cognisance of objectionable statements made by a #Jadavpur University professor. A team from @NCWindia, led by Smt. @sharmarekha, will meet the University's Vice Chancellor to discuss the matter during their scheduled visit to #WestBengal this week."

Several students demonstrated against the professor's remark inside the campus on Tuesday.
Kanak Sarkar had posted: "Virgin girl is like sealed bottle or sealed packet. Are you willing to buy broken seal while purchasing a bottle of cold drinks or a packet of biscuits... To most boys virgin wife is like angel."
Amid protests, the professor later deleted the post.
