Kolkata, Nov 25 (IBNS): An engineering student of Kolkata's Jadavpur University (JU) on Thursday allegedly drowned in river Ganges while he and his companions were having a boat trip on the river near city's Panighat area under South Port Police Station limits, reports said.

According to reports, the second year student of JU's Computer Science and Engineering department- Raunak Saha- went to Panighat with his four friends- Snitendu Das, Anurag Roy, Shraddha Dey and Debarati Majumder, for a boat trip on river Ganges.

During the boat trip, Raunak Saha, who was a resident of Salt Lake's Purbachal area, suddenly fell into river due to negligence of the boatman and drowned in the water, his friends alleged.

Meanwhile, denying the allegation, the accused boatman, Sk. Saifuddin, claimed that Raunak's companions pushed him into the water.

Police have started investigation into the matter and also a search operation in the river to trace out the missing youth.

"We have detained the boatman and are quizzing him. Missing student's friends are also being questioned," a senior official of Kolkata Police told IBNS.

"After primary investigation, we have come to know that they all were drunk during the boat trip," the official added.

Till the last update came in, no complaint has been lodged by the 20-year-old student's family and his body has not been found.
