Kolkata: Students block road to protest school shut down

Kolkata, Dec 2 (IBNS): The students of Beck Bagan Central Model School on Wednesday morning blocked an important road near Park Circus in Kolkata to protest against the authority's decision to shut down the present school building and shift it to another location, ahead of annual examination.

According to reports, acting on the Supreme Court's order, the authority of Central Model School on Wednesday handed over the building to the actual owner of the property and police locked the school's gate.

To protest against it, students of the school and their guardians blocked Beck Bagan crossing, making a human chain, since 11 am. on Wednesday.

A heavy traffic jam was created in the eastern part of the city during the four and half hours road-blockade and office-bound commuters suffered a lot.

A huge police force from three nearby police stations led by two Deputy Commissioners (DC) rushed to the spot. When police told them to withdraw road-blockade, protesters suddenly started stone and brick pelting, aiming at the police force.

One Additional OC of Beniapukur Police Station- A. K. Sarkar- was reportedly hit by a brick.

Police allegedly lathicharged the protesters to control the situation, where one school student was injured.

Meanwhile, police denied the allegation of lathicharge.

However, when West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee interfered into the matter and announced to hold a meeting with the school authority, police, students and their guardians on Thursday, the road-blockade was withdrawn around 3:30 pm.
