Kolkata: Train blockade at Dasnagar station hits passengers in Howrah-Kharagpur section

Kolkata, Jan 24 (IBNS): Train service in South Eastern railway's Howrah-Kharagpur section has been disrupted as hundreds of passengers have been blocking railway tracks at Dasnagar railway station in Howrah city since Thursday morning, reports said.

According to reports, a Howrah bound Panskura local train (EMU) was allegedly stopped at Dasnagar station on the mail line (middle track) which does not have any platform and commuters had to jump on the railway tracks to deboard the train.

Following the incident, a section of passengers of the EMU had started blocking the railway tracks at Dasnagar, barely 4.3 km from Howrah railway station, from 8 am.

"After crossing Santragachi station, the local train was surprisingly sent to the middle track, which is generally used to pass express trains, and the train stopped on the mail line at Dasnagar station," a demonstrating passenger told IBNS.

"Passengers had to deboard the train by jumping off railway tracks and a major accident was narrowly averted as another train was entering the station that time," he added.

Due to the hour-long blockade, several local and express trains towards both up and down directions have been stopped at different rail stations at the peak office hours.

A senior SE Railway official said that efforts to lift the blockade and clear the tracks were underway.

"RPF (Railway Protection Force) and GRP (Government Railway Police) personnel and senior railway officials have been deployed to the scene and our talks are on with the protesting commuters," the senior railway officer told IBNS.

Chief Public Relation Officer (CPRO) of South Eastern Railway, Sanjay Ghosh, said that an investigation had been ordered into the matter.

"A probe has been initiated into the incident to find out who was responsible for such blunder and we can assure that strict action will be taken if anyone is found guilty," Ghosh told IBNS.
