Kumaraswamy hints at fielding son Nikil and nephew Prajwal in Lok Sabha polls
New Delhi, Mar 8 (UNI): Winnability is the supreme factor based on which candidates are chosen and that comes before nepotism or family connections, Karnataka chief minister H.D. Kumaraswamy said here on Friday.
"Nepotism is not an important issue. Winning elections is important. This is what works to select the candidates," Kumaraswamy said here after laying the foundation stone of 'Karnataka Bhavan' here.
He also hinted that his family may field "two more members" in the Lok Sabha elections.
To specific queries about his son Nikil Gowda and brother's son Prajwal Revanna being fielded in the upcoming polls, Kumaraswamy said: "They are also Indian citizens. Everyone has right to contest".
"Anyone over 25 years can contest elections," he said.
Of the 28 Lok Sabha seats in Karnataka, the JD(S) will contest from 10. Alliance partner Congress will contest from the rest. The national party is still toying with the idea of giving only eight seats to the JD(S).
From the Deve Gowda family, there are six family members and relatives already in active politics.
Former Prime Minister Deve Gowda is MP from Hassan, his son Kumaraswamy is chief minister, while another son Revanna is PWD minister. A relative is transport minister and Kumaraswamy's wife Anitha is MLA. Mr Revanna's wife Bhavani Revanna is zilla panchayat member in Hassan.
JD(S) sources said former PM Deve Gowda may not contest this year's elections.
