Lankan Navy arrests 29 Tamil fishermen
New Delhi, June 1 (IBNS): Sri Lankan Navy on Sunday arrested 29 fishermen from Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu and detained six boats, reports said.
The fishermen and the boats have been reportedly taken to Talaimannar.
This comes even after Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa had ordered the release of arrested Indian fishermen to show a goodwill measure to mark the occasion of PM Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony, which was attended by him.
The arrests comes also ahead of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's meeting with the PM in New Delhi on June 3.
Jayalalithaa had earlier protested Rajapaksa's attendance on May 26 for Modi's swearing-in ceremony saying it would hurt Tamil sentiment.
The talks between India and Sri Lanka on the fishermen issue had ended in deadlock early last month. The negotiators are likely to meet again this month.
