LS polls counting: Modi set to become next PM, thanks Vadodara

As per the trends at 7.30 pm, the NDA is ahead in 339 seats while the Congress-led UPA, which ruled the nation for the past 10 years, was leading at 58 seats.

Other parties are currently leading in 147 seats.

The BJP alone is ahead in 284 seats with Modi winning both in Varanasi and Vadodara seats.

The Congress is ahead in 44 seats.

In his first public address after registering a whooping victory in the Lok Sabha polls, Narendra Modi thanked the voters in his constituency Vadodara for supporting him.

As the crowd cheered 'Modi! Modi!', the Gujarat Chief Minister, under whose leadership, the BJP-led NDA delivered a strong  result at the polls, said: "I humbly thank people of Vadodara."

Thanking the people of his constituency, Modi said: "After filing nomination, I have been able to give Vadodara barely 50 minutes and you have given me 5.7 lakh votes. Thank you for your support."

He said people of Vadodara have created a new record by giving him 5.7 lakh votes.

"In the history of elections such a margin was not seen in a general elections ever," he said.

He said: "This is the first time after independence that a party other than the Congress has got a clear majority." 

Meanwhile, party president Rajnath Singh on Friday sought former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee's blessings by visiting him at his residence.

"Had Shri Atalji's blessings after BJP's historic win in General Elections. Now leaving Delhi for my constituency in Lucknow," Singh tweeted.

Earlier in the day, he said though it was being said that the Indian success story has ended, time has come to rewrite it.

"Time has come for us to rewrite the Indian success story," said Rajnanth Singh addressing the media.

He said the new government will give good governance and credited the victory largely to Modi's hard work.

"People have voted for a change and for Narendra Modi and the BJP," he said.

Party veteran LK Advani on Friday raised eyebrows after he said an assessment is required on how much the Gujarat CM's leadership had contributed to the win.

"I think there is a need for a detailed analysis on this. It needs to be assessed as to how much contribution has been made by Narendra Modi's leadership, RSS and BJP towards the party's victory," he said.

"I believe corruption, inflation and bad governance were the main reasons for such results to come out," he told reporters here.

Among the other major parties, Arvind Kejriwal's AAP, which had created a storm in the Lok Sabha polls, is currently ahead in only four seats.

The AIADMK is ahead in 37 seats as of now.

The TMC is ahead in 34 seats.

The BJD is leading in 18 seats.

The TRS is leading in 11 seats while the SP is ahead in 5 seats.

In the politically crucial Uttar Pradesh, the BJP is ahead in 72 seats while the SP is ahead in six seats.

After trailing initially, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi is leading in Amethi seat. BJP's Smriti Irani gave him a good fight.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi has won from Rae Bareli seat by 461093  seats.

After being badly defeated in the Lok Sabha polls, Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi accepted the loss.

"I wish the new government all the best. From my part, the Congress party has done pretty badly. As the Vice President of the party, I hold myself responsible," Rahul said.

Meanwhile, Sonia Gandhi said she accepted the defeat.

"We did not receive the support we hoped for. We accept that in democracy all these happens. We understand all people are against us. I accept the defeat of the Congress party. We hope that the new government won't compromise on the country's unity," she said.

SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav is ahead by 1,07,399 votes in Azamgarh.

BJP president Rajnath Singh is also leading in Lucknow seat.

In Gandhinagar, BJP leader LK Advani won by 538643  votes.

BJP leader Susjma Swaraj also son from Vidisha seat.

Former UP CM  Mayawati's BSP has been wiped out in the polls.

Mamata Banerjee's wave continued in West Bengal with her TMC ahead in 34 seats while Left Front is leading in only 2 seat while Congress is ahead in 4. The BJP is ahead in four seats.

"I thank the people of the state for the result we saw today," Banerjee told media.

"Trinamool stands for economic stability and works for people of all caste, creed and religion," she said.

Former Railway Minister and Trinamool Congress candidate from Barrackpore Dinesh Trivedi won by a margin of over 1 lakh votes.

Banerjee's nephew Abhishek Banerjee is leading i the Diamond Harbour seat.
