Madhya Pradesh: Over 80 killed due to cylinder explosion at restaurant, PM Narendra Modi mourns

Jhabua, Madhya Pradesh, Sept 12 (IBNS) At least 80 people have been killed and equal number of people were injured in a series of massive explosions after a gas cylinder exploded at a restaurant near Madhya Pradesh's Jhabua district on Saturday, reports said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condoled the loss of lives in the mishap.

"Extremely pained at the loss of lives due to the cylinder blast in Jhabua. My deepest condolences to the families of the deceased," Modi said.

"I wish all those injured a speedy recovery. MP Govt. is monitoring the situation closely," the Prime Minister said.

Injured people have been hospital with many of them in critical condition while the rescue operation is said to be in the final stage.

The explosion at Sethiya Restaurant, situated near a bus stand in Petlawad town, took place around 9 in the morning. The single- storey building housing the restaurant collapsed under the impact of the huge explosion.

Police said explosions were so massive because of fireworks materials and even gelatine sticks being stacked inside a room just beside the restaurant in the same building.

A number of adjacent buildings were also damaged.

Police said more people are feared to be trapped under the debris.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhand and the state's Director General of Police have left Bhopal to visit the spot.
