Madrasa controversy: Shiv Sena supports Maharashtra govt
Mumbai, July 5 (IBNS): The Shiv Sena has supported the BJP-led Maharashtra government, which received flak for its decision to not consider Madrasas, that do not teach primary subjects, as schools.
An editorial in Saamna, the mouthpiece of alliance partner Shiv Sena, on Sunday read, "This move should not be seen as one which is pre-conceived or which is intended to strike a blow to religious education. On the contrary, this should be taken as a way to get Muslim children in the mainstream."
Maharashtra Minister Vinod Tawde earlier said institutions not teaching children under national curriculum framework are considered out of school.
"Teaching of core subjects is as per RTE norms under which, children not taught under Nat'l Curriculum framework are considered out of school," Tawde had tweeted.
"Teaching of core subjects like sci, math alongside religion in Madarasas is aimed at betterment of students, & not to hurt religious feelings," he had said.
Trigerring fresh controversy, the state government has said that madrasas not teaching subjects like Maths, English and Science will be considered as non-schools.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had defended the move as a means to bring Madrassa students into mainstream formal education.
According to a 2013 study, there are nearly 2000 Madrasas in Maharashtra imparting education to over 1.5 lakh students.
Calling the move unconstitutional, Congress spokesperson Sanjay Nirupam had said, "No child should be discriminated along religious lines. We are going to take the issue in the state Assembly."
