Mallikarjun Kharge will lead Congress in Lok Sabha
"Shri Mallikarjun Kharge will be the leader of Congress in Lok Sabha," the Indian National Congress posted on its Facebook page.
The nomination of Kharge as the Leader of Opposition in the Lower House, a Dalit leader and a second time MP from Gulbarga, was made by Congress President Sonia Gandhi.
On being asked whether the prospect of taking on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, would be a challenging task, Kharge told NDTV channel: "I don't want to talk about these things today. I am thankful to Mrs Gandhi for having faith in me."
Even as the Congress party was decimated in the Lok Sabha polls, Kharge, 70, retained the Gulbarga Lok Sabha seat in Karnataka.
The Congress performed poorly in the recently held the Lok Sabha polls as the party, which ruled the nation for the past 10 years, could win only 44 seats in the Lok Sabha polls.
