Mamata Banerjee expresses sadness over ex-UN secretary general Kofi Annan's death

Kolkata, Aug 18 (IBNS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday mourned the death of former UN secretary general Kofi Annan.

Remembering Annan, Banerjee said: "Today we mourn the passing away of Kofi Annan. He was an able diplomat who served as UN Secretary-General. His contribution to peace won him the Nobel Prize in 2001. My heartfelt condolences to his family and his admirers around the world." 

Ex-UN secretary general Kofi Anan has passed away,  the Kofi Annan Foundation confirmed on Saturday.

He was 80.

The Foundation tweeted: "It is with immense sadness that the Annan family and the Kofi Annan Foundation announce that Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nations and Nobel Peace Laureate, passed away peacefully on Saturday 18th August after a short illness."

Annan was a Ghanaian diplomat who served as the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations from January 1997 to December 2006.

Annan and the UN were the co-recipients of the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize.

He was the founder and chairman of the Kofi Annan Foundation, as well as chairman of The Elders, an international organization founded by Nelson Mandela.
