Mamata condemns Assam violence, attacks Modi
In a veiled attack on Modi, Banerjee said in a Facebook post: " Lok Sabha election in Assam is over, but the election process is still continuing in various other parts of the country. Certain comments of some political parties including the aspirant of High office are adding fuel. Their language must be controlled and they should not play politics with fire where innocent lives are involved."
She said the violence in the east Indian state is 'unfortunate'.
"I am very shocked about the recent incident of violence in Assam where innocent Bengali speaking minority and tribal brothers and sisters are being brutally murdered. This is most unfortunate," she said.
"We are worried as Assam is our border state. We had extended support and shelter to the affected people in the past. On humanitarian considerations, our doors are open for help to the affected persons even now," Banerjee said.
She said: "Why the Government of Assam and the Union Government are silent? Why no action is being taken by the statutory authorities like National Human Rights Commission, Minorities Commission Tribal Commission etc.? I urge the Government and other political parties concerned to ensure that atrocities and violence are immediately stopped. We condemn such incidents of atrocities and violence. It is a shame.. shame.. shame."
The death toll in the killings by suspected NDFB (S) militants in two districts of Assam rose to 32 on Saturday.
The region had witnessed widespread ethnic violence two years ago between the Muslims and Bodos.
While over 100 people died in the violence in 2012, countless people were rendered homeless.
