Massive deployment of police force as farmers threaten to block Delhi-Jaipur Highway on Sunday

New Delhi/IBNS: The farmers unions protesting the Centre's farm laws will take out a tractor rally on Sunday to block the Delhi-Jaipur Highway, vowing to intensify their protest even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the laws are aimed at doubling their income by facilitating access to alternate markets.

Thousands of farmers from Rajasthan will agitate against the new farm laws by blocking the Delhi-Jaipur Highway with their tractors, reported NDTV.

Earlier on Saturday, Delhi Police deployed additional forces and concrete barriers at different points of the national capital after farmers announced escalation of their protests and threatened to block two major connectors to Delhi-- the Yamuna Expressway and the Delhi-Jaipur Highway.

So far, there has been no blockade on Delhi’s borders with Gurgaon and at other points of National Highway 8 that connects Delhi with Jaipur, said media reports.

An NDTV report said, over 1,000 policemen have been deployed on Delhi-Gurgaon border and nearly 3,500 policemen in Faridabad to stop the movement of protesters after they said they will occupy Delhi-Jaipur highway.

Police also prevented groups of hundreds of farmers from blocking the main highway from Delhi to Agra, the report added.

Police have said multi-layered barricading and heavy deployment of forces has been done to prevent inconvenience to commuters.

Delhi Police have informed in advance the closure of several border points and suggested that the motorists take alternative routes.

“The chilla & Gazipur borders are closed for traffic from Noida & Gaziabad to Delhi due to farmers protests. People are advised to take alternate route for coming to Delhi via Anad Vihar, DND, Apsara & bhopra borders. Singhu, Auchandi, Piau Maniyari & Mangesh borders are closed. Please take alternate routes via Lampur, Safiabad, Saboli & Singhu school toll tax borders. Traffic has been diverted from Mukarba & GTK road. Pl avoid Outer Ring Rd ,GTK road,NH 44,” the department said in a tweet.

“Tikri, Dhansa Borders are closed for any Traffic Movement. Jhatikara Borders is open only for two wheelers and pedestrian movement. Available Open Borders to Haryana are following Borders *Jharoda (Only Single Carriageway/Road), Daurala, Kapashera, Badusarai, Rajokri NH 8, Bijwasan/Bajghera, Palam Vihar and Dundahera Borders,” it added.

Hundreds of farmers, mostly from Punjab, are camping at Delhi's Singhu, Tikri, Ghazipur and Chilla (Delhi-Noida) border points since the last 17 days.
