Meghalaya police recover huge cache of arms, bomb making items

Guwahati, Apr 29 (IBNS): The East Garo Hills district police have recovered huge cache of arms and bomb making items from different locations in Meghalaya's hills district, officials said on Sunday. 

East Garo Hills district Superintendent of Police (SP) R Momin said that after searching for several days, the police search team recovered huge cache of arms and bomb making items from different locations of Rongbokgre and Dorengkigre village areas.

The recovered arms belonged to the banned outfit Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA).

Security personnel have recovered one 7.62 Machine gun, one 7.62 SLR Assault Rifle, one DBBL, one DBBL barrel, eight wireless sets, thirteen wireless set batteries,  five primed IED'S in  plastic containers,  six twelve volts batteries for IED,  five circuits for RC IED.

The top Meghalaya cop said the machine gun is one of the iconic weapons used by GNLA chief Sohan D Shira, who was killed during gun battle with security forces,  to promote the outfit at the initial stage and many pictures of him carrying the weapon was circulated in various groups and social media.

East Garo Hills district police had earlier recovered huge cache of arms and ammunition which were buried by the outfit members.

After killing of Sohan D Shira, C-in-C of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), Meghalaya police is now trying to crack down the insurgent group and recover arms, ammunition and explosives of the outfit.

On Apr 9, Meghalaya Police recovered 30 pistols with 44 pistol magazines, 2 AK46, 1 LMG and 2 magazines, 1 INSAS and 2 magazines, 44 SLR magazines, 1 AK magazine, 60 SLR live rounds, 7 walky talkie sets, along with more items, from Meghalaya's East Garo Hills district.

Police also arrested 5 people.

On the other hand, police had launched a massive search operation to locate the hidden weapons and recovered over 3500 rounds ammunition, 10 numbers remote circuit for IED, two remote controls, 16 charger clips, 4 ammunition boxes from different locations on Apr 11.
