Modi congratulates Amit Shah for being re-elected as BJP Chief
New Delhi, Jan 24 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated Amit Shah for being re-elected as the President of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
"Congratulations to Shri @AmitShah on being elected BJP president. I am confident the Party will scale newer heights under his leadership," PM Modi tweeted.
"Amit Bhai combines grassroot-level work & rich organisational experience which will benefit the Party immensely. @AmitShah," he wrote.
This will be Shah's second term serving in the post.
However, the election raised many eyebrows as senior party leaders like LK Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi were missing during the proceeding.
Following the election, Union Home Minister and Rajnath Sigh told reporters: "There was no other nomination because there was a consensus in the party."
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rajnath Singh and several BJP chief ministers reportedly proposed Shah's name for the post.
Shah, who was a general secretary of the BJP, is seen as a close confidante of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He took charge as BJP chief in July 2014.
In the last Lok Sabha polls, Shah was in charge of Uttar Pradesh from where BJP won big time.
According to party statement, Amit Shah undertook a massive and ambitious membership drive during his first stint as President with party’s members rising nearly five times to over 11 crore from 2.5 crore in a short period. This also made BJP the largest political party in the world.
"Shah, who was again elected as BJP President today, had travelled extensively across the country as part of this membership drive and covered nearly 40,000 km as part of his effort to enroll more members. Of this, Shah travelled 12,000 km in January 2015 and nearly 13,500 km in April 2015 to boost membership," an official party statement claimed.
"The biggest gains came in states like Jharkhand, Sikkim, Andhra Pradesh, Tripura, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Odisha and Jammu & Kashmir. In Jharkhand, for example, number of BJP members rose sharply to 26.82 lakh from a mere 21,000 earlier," it said.
Led by Shah, the BJP will soon plunge into its campaign for polls in five states this year.
