Modi urges China to make fair assessment of India's NSG bid
Tashkent/New Delhi, June 23 (IBNS): Meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping in Uzbekistan capital Tashkent on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Summit (SCO), Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday urged him to make a fair and objective assessment of India's application to become a member of the elite Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).
"Prime Minister Modi urged China to make a fair and objective assessment of India’s application and judge it on its own merits. He said that China should contribute to the emerging consensus in Seoul," Vikas Swarup, Official Spokesperson of Ministry of External Affairs, said during a press conference here.
Earlier President Xi welcomed India’s accession to the SCO and said it would strengthen it.
Prime Minister Modi also thanked President Xi for China’s support to India’s membership of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.
Swaroop said India told China that it should contribute to emerging consensus at Seoul on the issue of NSG.
The meeting with Xi Jinping was held in the afternoon, around the same time when the plenary of the NSG started discussion on the application of India’s entry into the group at Seoul, South Korea.
The expert-level sessions in Seoul over the last two days have reportedly discussed the membership issue before the two-day plenary session beginning on Thursday.
In what transpired as a Chinese move to block India's NSG membership, the country has maintained that membership issue has not been on the agenda of the session. It has also argued that if India, being a non-NPT country, is allowed to be an NSG member, then Pakistan should also be let in.
However, throwing its weight behind India, the US has called upon other NSG countries to support India's stake for membership.
Emphasising that India’s entry into the four multilateral export control regimes, including NSG, will “bolster international efforts on combating proliferation”, the French foreign ministry on Wednesday called on the members to “take a positive decision."
