Modi wishes Mulayam on his birthday

New Delhi/Lucknow, Nov 22 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday wished Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav a "long and healthy life" on his 75th birthday.

"On Mulayam Singh Yadav ji's birthday I extend my greetings to him and pray that he is blessed with a long and healthy life," PM Modi posted on his personal Twitter account.

A mega two-day birthday bash was organised for Yadav in Rampur in Uttar Pradesh which began on Friday

The bash began at Friday midnight with the cutting of an enormous 75-feet, 500-kg cake in Uttar Pradesh's Rampur.

There were fireworks and cultural programme - the performers included popular sufi singer Hans Raj Hans.

Earlier on Friday, Yadav rode an imported Victorian-style 'buggy' (horse-driven carriage) and around 40 ministers gathered for his bash.

Thousands of supporters accompanied the 'buggy' carrying Mulayam, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and minister Azam Khan, as it proceeded towards the Jauhar University where the SP chief celebrated his birthday.

Some schools were shut for two days and students made to line the streets to welcome the SP chief as he rode past them in an imported vintage buggy.

On Saturday, state had lined up a series of programmes for SP supremo, including the distribution of 400 cycles to impoverished youths and scholarships for students.

He is also expected to lay the foundation stone of a medical college, besides addressing a public meeting.

Uttarakhand Governor Aziz Qureshi and several other dignitaries will reportedly attend the function at the Mohammad Ali Jauhar University.

The Samajwadi Party has decided to celebrate Singh's 76th birthday as 'Samta Diwas'.

When questioned about the funding for the grand event, an irate Azam Khan courted controversy by saying sarcastically, "The Taliban, a terror group, and underworld don Dawood Ibrahim has funded it."
