Mumbai's Elphinstone Staton renamed Prabhadevi

Kolkata, July 19 (IBNS): Shedding the British era name, Mumbai's  Elphinstone Road station has been rechristened as Prabhadevi station.

A statement issued by the Western Railway said the new name came into effect from 12:00 am, Thursday (July 19).

"Necessary changes are being made on station boards, indicators and public address systems for the benefit of passengers," read the Railways official statement.

The station code for newly renamed Prabhadevi station will be PBHD.

Earlier it was named after Lord Elphinstone, who was the Governor of erstwhile Bombay from 1853 to 1860.

In September 2018, 23 people were killed and more than 39 injured in a peak-hour stampede on the station's age-old footbridge, sending a shockwave and triggering an outcry, prompting the authorities to go for necessary renovation.
