Srinagar/UNI: Expressing concern over the continued house detention of Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq from August 4, 2019, the Muttaheda Majlis-e-Ulma (MMU) on Thursday demanded his immediate release before the commencement of Holy fasting month of Ramdhan.

Mirwaiz , who is also chairman of moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC) has in house detention since August 4, 2019 , a day before the Centre abrogated Article 370 besides divided Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories (UT).

However, central government has claimed in Parliament during the last session that nobody is under house detention in Kashmir.

Addressing a press conference at Mirwaiz Manzil in the down town on Thursday the MMU, an amalgam of 40 different Mulsim organizations said the Ulmas held a meeting on March 3, and demanded release of religious head of Kashmir Mirwaiz. The participants in that meeting had expressed their concern about continued house detention of Mirwaiz who is being prevented from performing his religious practices, including addressing Friday congregations at historic Jamia Masjid.

Describing the detention of Mirwaiz illegal and unconstitutional, the MMU leaders said it was nothing but to hurt the religious sentiments of lakhs of people and prevent him from performing religious duties towards the society.

Despite appeal by religious , civil society and other organizations, Mirwaiz was not released, they alleged.

''However, we again appeal to the central and local governments today to release Mirwaiz so that he could perform his religious practices''.

''We have therefore decided that Ulmas and other religious leaders will demand release of Mirwaiz during their Friday sermons in their respective mosques, Jamia Masjid, shrines and other worship places in the valley.
