Kohima/UNI: On the occasion of 71st Republic Day today, the Governor of Nagaland R N Ravi and his Lady wife hosted ‘At Home’ at the Raj Bhavan in Kohima, where the Durbar Hall of the Raj Bhavan rechristened as Dr. Imongliba Hall.

Addressing the gathering at Raj Bhavan Governor Ravi said it is an occasion to remember and pay our respects to Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation and other leaders whose struggles and sacrifices led to decolonisation of India. On the occasion, he also saluted the pioneers of Nagaland who fought for the welfare and wellbeing of the Naga people in times of turbulence.

"These leaders under extraordinary circumstances put their heads together and carved out what is best for the people of Nagaland. The Governor said that the Naga people have not forgotten Dr. Imkongliba and his sacrifices for the Naga people in times of turmoil. In his honour, the Durbar Hall has been named Dr. Imkongliba Hall as a sign of respect and honour to his deeds and sacrifices.

Delivering a short speech, former Nagaland Chief Minister Dr S C Jamir said it was the right forum and the right occasion as one of the pioneers of the State to unfold some of the truths about the achievements of the NPC that were suppressed till today.

Jamir stated that the Sixteen Point Agreement of I960 was evolved after exhaustive and widespread deliberations by the representatives of the 16 tribes of Nagaland, is a prominent milestone in the chequered political history of the Nagas.

He further added that the solemn and unanimous resolution of the Naga Peoples Convention was to salvage the hopes and aspirations of the Naga people. Jamir also said that after examining in depth the historical and political records of the Naga National Council, the Naga Peoples Convention included Article 371 (A) as one of the most important demands during the negotiation with the Prime Minister of India in I960.

However, Jamir said that over the years the 16 Point Agreement had been scorned and maligned by vested interests and even including those who are enjoying the fruits of Statehood.

Jamir said that the greatest need in the current political scenario in Nagaland is to recognize and conform to the contemporary realities, as we are in the threshold of a new dawn for a united, peaceful and progressive Nagaland. He also gave a clarion call to the people of Nagaland in general and the leaders in particular should completely bury their hatchets with true Christian spirit reinvent, redesign and revolutionize the new Nagaland to measure up to the sanctity of the declaration of our Churches “Nagaland for Christ."

On behalf of the family members of Dr. Imkongliba Ao, Tali Longkumer expressed profound gratitude to his Governor R.N. Ravi and the Government for arranging such a solemn programme in honoring the memory of his father and his colleagues especially on such a historic day when the people of India solemnly resolved to give to themselves a sovereign, democratic republic.

Nagaland Governor RN Ravi and Chief Minister Nagaland Neiphiu Rio unveiled the Plaque rechristening Durbar hall as ‘Dr. Imkongliba Hall.’ Chief Minister Nagaland Neiphiu Rio delivered a short speech at the programme.
