Narada sting: Kolkata Police summon Mathew Samuel for interrogation
Kolkata, Jun 23 (IBNS): Kolkata Police's Economic Offences Wing (EOW) on Thursday summoned Narada News's CEO Mathew Samuel in connection with its ongoing probe into a sting operation case, officials said.
Through an email, sent to Narada News's official email id, Samuel has been called to Kolkata Police headquarters Lalbazar for questioning.
"As Mathew Samuel could not be reached over phone, we sent an email to Narada News's official id, where he has been asked to visit Lalbazar and meet the Assistant Commissioner of KP's EOW immediately," one senior official of Kolkata Police told IBNS.
When he was asked about the summon, Mathew Samuel told IBNS, "Yes, I received such email today. I am out of India now. After returning back to India, I will discuss with my counsel on this matter to take decision."
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on June 17 (Friday) announced to hold a probe into Narada sting case under the leadership of Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, while the matter is subjudicial in a division bench of Calcutta High Court, comprising of CJ Manjulla Chellur and Justice Arijit Banerjee.
Following Mamata Banerjee's announcement, Kolkata Mayor Shovan Chatterjee's wife Ratna Chatterjee claimed that she had lodged a complaint against Narada News at New Market Police Station in central Kolkata on June 18 (Saturday).
Besides forming a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to enquire the matter, Kolkata Police have also initiated a case against Narada News under several IPC sections, including 120-B, 469, 171-G, 500 and 505 (1)(b), based upon Ratna Chatterjee's complaint, a senior official of Kolkata Police told IBNS.
Senior advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya on Monday brought the matter to court's attention. To clarify the issue, the court has set Friday as the next date of hearing in this case.
Since March 14, news portal- Narada News- released several sting operation footage, where TMC's leaders, ministers, MPs and MLAs were exposed while allegedly taking bribes.
From the beginning, TMC leaderships had claimed that the sting footage was doctored and conspiracy of oppositions.
